OPD vs IPD – Understand the Difference

When you go to the hospital, you must have often heard two words – OPD and IPD. Most people hear them, but do not know the exact difference between them. Both these terms are directly related to our treatment.

What are OPD and IPD? (Definition and Full Form)

1. OPD (Outpatient Department):

OPD means Out Patient Department. It means a department where the patient comes for treatment but does not need to be admitted to the hospital. Such as:

  • Visiting a doctor for a common fever or cough
  • Getting a regular check-up for a chronic disease
  • Consulting a specialist
  • Getting a blood test, X-ray or vaccination

In OPD, the patient returns home the same day after getting the test done or taking medicine.

2. IPD (Inpatient Department):

IPD means Inpatient Department. It means that the patient is admitted to the hospital because he has to remain under the doctor’s supervision for some time. Such as:

  • Getting an operation done
  • Care after delivery or surgery
  • Treatment in case of serious injury or illness

In IPD, the patient stays in the hospital for one or several days, where a team of doctors and nurses take care of him 24 hours a day.
